1. Introduction
MI Division ("we," "us," or "our") operates the GPS & GNSS Accuracy Test mobile application (the "App"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our App. By downloading, installing, or using the App, you agree to the terms of this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with the terms of this Privacy Policy, please do not use the App.
2. Information We Collect
a. Location Data
The App requests precise location access to provide its core functionality: displaying your latitude and longitude in multiple coordinate formats, horizontal and vertical accuracy, altitude, speed, bearing, and the GNSS satellite data (signal strength, constellation, elevation, azimuth, and dilution-of-precision values) used by the satellite view, radar view, and accuracy test. Location is collected only while the App is open and in the foreground; the App does not request or use background location access.
Location is processed on your device and is not transmitted to any server operated by us. It is passed to Google services on your device for two purposes: rendering the map view (Google Maps SDK) and resolving a human-readable street address for your current position (Android reverse geocoding, which is fulfilled by Google Play services). These services may transmit your coordinates to Google in accordance with Google's privacy policy.
b. Device Sensor Data
The App reads your device's motion and position sensors (rotation vector sensor, or the accelerometer and magnetometer where a rotation vector sensor is not available) to compute the compass heading shown in the map and satellite views. Sensor data is processed locally on your device in real time and is never transmitted off the device.
c. Device Status Data
The App reads your device's battery level and battery temperature to display power consumption, estimated standby time, and temperature in the home screen widget. This data is read locally and is never transmitted off the device.
d. Locally Stored Data
The App stores the following on your device only, in the App's private storage: your preferences (coordinate format, distance, altitude and speed units, bearing reference, time and date format, keep-screen-on, widget enabled, location update rate), a cache of your most recent position fix, satellite snapshot and resolved address so the App can show data immediately on launch, session and battery timing baselines used by the widget, and your subscription state. This data never leaves your device and is not accessible to us.
3. Third-Party Services
The App integrates third-party services that may independently collect data in accordance with their own privacy policies. These services include:
- Google Play Services Location — for providing precise GPS/GNSS coordinates, accuracy, altitude, speed, bearing and satellite status used throughout the App. Google Privacy Policy
- Google Maps SDK for Android — for rendering the map, your position marker and accuracy test track. Your coordinates and map interactions are processed by Google to serve map tiles. Google Privacy Policy
- Android Geocoding (Google Play services) — for converting your current coordinates into a street address shown in the location panel. Coordinates are sent to Google to perform the lookup. The resolved address is cached on your device only. Google Privacy Policy
- Google Play Billing — for in-app subscription purchases. Purchase transactions, payment details and subscription status are handled entirely by Google Play. We never receive or store your payment information. Google Privacy Policy
We encourage you to review the privacy policies of these third-party services. We are not responsible for the data practices of third-party services.
4. Information We Do Not Collect
The App does not collect or use:
- Personal information (name, email, phone number, or address)
- Device identifiers or advertising IDs
- Analytics or usage tracking data
- Crash reports or diagnostics
- Cookies or web tracking technologies
- Photos, audio recordings, or media files
- Contacts, calendar, or messages
- Location while the App is closed or in the background
The App does not require user accounts or registration, does not display advertising, and does not operate any backend server that receives your data.
5. How We Use Your Information
We use the information processed by the App to:
- Display your latitude and longitude in your chosen coordinate format (including MGRS, decimal degrees and DMS)
- Display horizontal and vertical accuracy, altitude, speed, bearing, and GNSS satellite information including signal strength, constellation, elevation, azimuth and dilution of precision
- Run the on-demand accuracy test and compute its result summary from position samples taken during the test
- Show your position and accuracy track on the map, and resolve a street address for your current position
- Compute compass heading from device sensors
- Populate the optional home screen widget with your latest readings, battery level, battery temperature and session timing
- Process in-app subscription purchases for premium features
- Store your preferences and cached readings locally on your device
If you use the "share location" feature, the App creates a message containing a Google Maps link to your current coordinates and hands it to the app you choose. Nothing is shared unless you initiate the share and pick a destination.
6. Data Sharing
We do not sell, trade, rent, or otherwise share your personal information with third parties for their marketing purposes. Data may be shared only in the following limited circumstances:
- With the third-party service providers listed above, solely for the purposes described in this policy
- With a recipient you personally choose, when you use the share location feature
- When required by law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request
- To protect the rights, property, or safety of MI Division, our users, or the public
7. Data Security
All data transmitted between the App and third-party services is encrypted in transit using HTTPS. Preferences and cached readings are stored in the App's private storage, which is not readable by other apps on your device, and the App disables Android backup and cloud transfer of its data. No method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
8. Data Retention and Deletion
All data processed by the App (including preferences, cached position fix, cached satellite snapshot, cached address, battery and session baselines, and subscription state) is stored locally on your device and is not transmitted to our servers. You can delete all locally stored App data at any time by clearing the App's data in your device settings or by uninstalling the App. You can also revoke location permission at any time in your device settings. Coordinates sent to Google for map rendering and address lookup are not persisted by the App and are retained by Google according to their own data retention policies.
9. Children's Privacy
The App is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have collected personal information from a child under 13, we will take steps to delete such information promptly.
10. Your Rights
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Request correction or deletion of your personal data
- Object to or restrict certain processing of your data
- Withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent
Since the App does not collect personal data on our servers, most data management can be performed directly on your device by revoking location permission or clearing the App's data. To exercise any additional rights, please contact us at the email address below.
11. Subscriptions
The App offers optional auto-renewing subscriptions that unlock premium features. Subscriptions are purchased, billed, renewed and cancelled through your Google Play account, and are subject to Google Play's terms. We do not receive or store your payment method or billing details. You can manage or cancel a subscription at any time in the Google Play Store subscriptions settings.
12. Disclaimer of Warranties and Limitation of Liability
The App and all information, content, and features are provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis without warranties of any kind, either express or implied. To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, MI Division disclaims all warranties, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement.
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, MI Division shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits or revenues, whether incurred directly or indirectly, or any loss of data, use, goodwill, or other intangible losses, resulting from (a) your use or inability to use the App; (b) any unauthorized access to or use of your data; (c) any errors, inaccuracies, or omissions in the App's content or functionality, including but not limited to coordinates, accuracy estimates, altitude, speed, bearing, satellite or dilution-of-precision values, compass headings, resolved addresses, accuracy test results, or battery and timing estimates; or (d) any other matter relating to the App.
The App is intended as a supplementary tool only and must not be relied upon as a primary source for navigation, surveying, positioning, emergency response, or any safety-critical decisions. Accuracy figures reported by the App are estimates supplied by your device's GNSS receiver and may be wrong. Users are solely responsible for verifying all information provided by the App through independent means.
13. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date. Your continued use of the App after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated Privacy Policy.
